From what began as a simple Grasshopper plugin for sharing 3D models, Speckle evolved into a transformative open-source project that addresses critical pain points in the AEC industry. Today, with its latest development, Speckle is AEC’s first collaborative data hub, your go-to partner for data connectivity, real-time collaboration, and workflow automation.
Being your AEC data hub means bringing together your tech stack, team, and projects in one central place with more advanced project management features.
Let’s unpack what’s new together!
It’s Time to Gain More Control Over Your Projects
Whether using Speckle in teams or solo, you told us how much you value data control and project management. Speckle is your data hub for data connectivity and your collaborative space for data exchange, communication, and automation. From this point onwards, we made it our mission to improve the AEC industry, which continues today with the launch of Workspaces.
Workspaces offer you a better and more secure way to manage projects in real time. How? By offering you control over your data, data security, and residency options while making your life—and your team’s lives—easier.
If you thought Speckle was just about collaboration, you haven’t met Workspaces yet.
Workspaces: A Deep Dive
Today marks the open beta of Workspaces, and we’re inviting you to try this new product with a fresh pair of eyes. Workspaces are built for teams and designed to make you more productive as a group while benefiting from higher security, better permission management, and stronger collaboration.
Before Workspaces, you could only get this level of security by creating your own server or joining our old enterprise plan. With Workspaces, you are one click away from reaching higher data security and privacy, more data control, and better project management in AEC.
Workspaces: Why it’s important for your team
Workspaces are your virtual Speckle home, where you can thrive as a group by securely organising your projects as you see fit.
Higher control over project accessibility
Gaining visibility and control over your projects helps you be more productive. This is why workspace admins have full visibility and control over members and projects inside a workspace. Admins can add members to a workspace, allowing them to access all projects. They can also invite external collaborators to join a workspace as guests, whose access will be limited to a certain set of projects.
More productive…and secure!
Workspaces can link with organisation’s email domains, unlocking membership access and ensuring team members are in the right space right away!
In addition, if a workspace has domain-based membership protection enabled, only users whose emails comply with the policy can become members of that workspace. Non-compliant users can still be invited as guests, reinforcing secure collaboration.
Your projects and peers, all in one place
Did you create a Speckle account with your personal email and want to join a workspace with your work email? No problem! You can now add multiple email addresses to your account.
Based on your email and workspace domain, you can easily find your allocated team’s workspace. No more wasting time working in a silo, do it all together in a shared - and safe - space. You don’t need to share a new project with the relevant people, and you don’t have to update permission when someone leaves.
Enterprise-Ready (coming soon)
In the coming months, we plan to introduce data security-centric features that will satisfy your IT Security team’s requirements. Workspaces is free to test whilst in beta; teams and managers will progressively gain access to even more advanced features such as:
- Data residency compliance: you will be able to decide in which region or country your data is hosted so as to comply with even the most stringent project requirements
- Service Legal Agreement (SLA)
- Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) / Single Sign On (SSO)
::: tip
Once Workspaces is out of beta in November, you will need to upgrade to the Team Plan to use it, but for now, it’s free!
Here's a quick summary of the new plans coming in November:
- Free: Keep using Speckle as you always have; there are no changes there. You will be able to test Workspaces and create up to 500 model versions in a Workspace as part of the Free plan.
- Team: Create a Workspace for your team for £49 per user per month. Ten external collaborators (guests) are included for free, after which you will be charged a small extra fee (£5 for guests with read-only access, £15 for guests with read-and-write access). The Team Plan allows you to have as many model versions as you want.
- Enterprise: We will tailor a pricing offer for you and your team based on your needs. Let’s talk about what you would like to achieve with Workspaces! Contact us at [email protected]

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between collaborators and reviewers?
Workspace admins can invite external users to a workspace as guests. The latter only get access to projects in the workspace to which they are specifically invited. Guests can never own projects in your workspace, but they may become collaborators, which will allow them to write access, or they may be reviewers, which will only grant them read access to the project.
What are the different permissions and roles within workspaces?
Workspace admin
- Full ownership of the workspace, including members, projects, and settings
- Project owner for all existing and new workspace projects
- Cannot be removed or have their role changed within a project by non-admins
Workspace member
- Project viewer for all existing and new workspace projects
- Can be removed or have role changed (for project and workspace) by admins
- Can create and own projects
- Cannot invite to workspace, can only invite other workspace users to projects
Workspace read/write guest
- Guest on workspace (read-only access), but has collaborator access on at least one project
- By changing an existing user to "guest," they will lose access to existing workspace projects
- Project owners can change their role or remove them
Workspace read-only guest
- Same as the above, but has only view access on the project
- Giving a read-only guest edit access to at least one project converts them to read/write guests
Can I use Workspaces as an individual or are they only for teams?
You can use Workspaces as an individual, although we encourage you to use them as a team as that's how you can experience maximum value with colleagues on various projects.
How do I request a custom feature for my Workspace?
Contact us at [email protected] and we can tailor an offer depending on your needs.
Will I be notified of upcoming changes to Workspace features or pricing?
